This was followed up with a huge nonconference road win against then #2 ranked Ohio State with an impressive score of 31-16. Oklahoma would win the next two games against Tulane and Baylor before slipping up in a shocking loss to Iowa State 38-31 the week before the Red River Rivalry Game. Oklahoma would then close out the 2017 regular season with six more wins against- Kansas State, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, TCU, Kansas, and West Virginia. For their efforts, Oklahoma would receive the #2 ranking in the College Football Playoffs and play in the Rose Bowl against #3 Georgia in which they would lose in an epic overtime struggle. With an injury to then starter, Michael Brewer in the preseason, Mayfield became the first ever true Freshman walk-on to ever start the season opener in college football history.
