2023 Heisman Trophy Winner Jayden Daniels

The 2023 Heisman trophy presentation was held on December 9, 2023 in New York City, New York. The Heisman Trophy Ceremony was broadcast live on ESPN and hosted by Chris Fowler. The ceremony highlighted the accomplishments of the four finalists invited by the Downtown Athletic Club, the governing body of the Heisman Trophy. The finalists were- Bo Nix, Marvin Harrison Jr, Michael Penix Jr, and Winner Jayden Daniels. [1]

Entering the 2023 college football season, the odds on favorite to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy was the defending Heisman Winner, Caleb Williams, quarterback at USC. Williams season while solid, it wasn’t as dominating as the previous season. For the season, Williams completed 255 of 388 passes, which equates to a 68.6 completion percentage totaling 3,633 yards with 30 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. After a 7-5 season, USC accepted a bid to play in the DirecTV Holiday Bowl, which Williams opted out of playing to focus on the 2024 NFL Draft, which he was ultimately selected #1 overall to the Chicago Bears.

Caleb Williams was not invited to the 2023 Heisman Trophy Ceremony.

The 2023 Heisman Trophy winner is Jayden Daniels, quarterback for the Louisiana State University (LSU) Tigers. Daniels, began his college football career at Arizona State University before transferring to LSU for his final two years of college football eligibility. His senior season at LSU, Daniels set an NCAA record for passer rating. Jayden had a stellar season leading the LSU Tigers to a 9-3 season. His passing stats included 236 of 327 {72.2%) passing for 3,812 yards 40 touchdowns to 4 interceptions. Daniels, a dual threat quarterback also added 135 rushes for 1,134 yards and 10 more touchdowns. His combined stats made him the overall yards leader for the 2023 college football season.

In addition to being the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner, Jayden Daniels also accumulated other major awards. Daniels was the 2023 Walter Camp Award Winner, which is “given annually to the collegiate American football player of the year, as decided by a group of NCAA Division I FBS head coaches and sports information directors under the auspices of the Walter Camp Football Foundation.” Daniels was also the Associated Press College Football Player of the Year. He was also the Davey O'Brien Award Winner, an award given to the best college football quarterback, by the association under the same name. Daniels also brought home the Manning Award, another top college quarterback award, along with the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, given to the top Upper Classman quarterback in the country.

Other awards that complement the 2023 Heisman Trophy Winner are a consensus All-American award. The top college male athlete for 2023 at the ESPY’s, as well as being the Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Jayden Daniels is also the only player in college football history with 12,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards. [3]

2023 Heisman Trophy Winner- Jayden Daniels’ Season

The 2023 LSU Tigers football season began on a sour note with a loss to Florida State on September 3rd in Orlando, Florida. LSU would rebound with three consecutive wins against Grambling State, Mississippi State, and Arkansas. LSU would then fall to Ole Miss in a shootout 55-49. LSU, lead by the eventual 2023 Heisman Trophy Winner, Jayden Daniels would rebound again with another three wins against Missouri, Auburn, and Army. They would then fall to Alabama on the road in a game where Daniels was taken out due to concussion protocol following a roughing the passer penalty against Dallas Turner.

LSU would then close out the season with three straight wins against Florida, Georgia State, and Texas A&M. This would give LSU an overall record of 9-3, finishing third in the SEC West division. For the team’s effort, they were invited to play in the 2024 Reliaquest Bowl in Tampa, Florida against Wisconsin, a game that LSU would win 35-31. However, the 2023 Heisman Trophy Winner, Jayden Daniels opted to sit out of the bowl game to prepare for the 2024 NFL Draft.

2023 Heisman Trophy Winner, Jayden Daniels in the NFL Draft

Jayden Daniels entered the 2024 NFL Draft after exhausting his college football eligibility. He would go second overall to the Washington Commanders. The 2024 NFL draft is notable for the selection of six quarterbacks in the first round, an NFL record. Jayden Daniels, the 2023 Heisman Trophy Winner was selected after Caleb Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy Winner. Daniels enters the 2024 NFL season in a battle for the starting position against Marcus Mariota, the 2014 Heisman Trophy Winner.
