2019 Heisman Trophy Winner Joe Burrow

The 2019 Heisman Trophy Ceremony took place on December 14, 2019 in New York City from the PlayStation Theater in Manhattan. The ceremony was broadcast live on ESPN. The event crowned the 85th Heisman Trophy Winner from an impressive collection of college standouts from the 2019 season. The finalist were- Justin Fields, Chase Young, Jalen Hurts, and Winner Joe Burrow.

The 2018 Heisman Trophy Winner, Kyler Murray chose to forgo his Senior season at Oklahoma and declared for the 2019 NFL Draft where he was selected first overall to the Arizona Cardinals. The other finalists from 2018 were Dewayne Haskins, and Tua Tagovailoa. Haskins declared for the NFL Draft as well, while Tagovailoa returned for the 2019 season but missed multiple games due to injury and was not selected as a finalist in 2019.

Joe Burrow, who was awarded the “Mr. Football” award in his home state of Ohio and Gatorade Player of the Year in 2014, accepted a scholarship offer to attend Ohio State University in 2015. At Ohio State, Burrow found himself deep down the depth chart. Burrow would redshirt his first year in Columbus and see backup playing time in ten total games in 2016 and 2017. Realizing that the coaching staff would choose 2018 Heisman Finalist Dewayne Haskins as the starter, Burrow chose to immediately transfer to Louisiana State University (LSU.) [1]

Joe Burrow would be named as the starter for the 2018 LSU football season. Burrow would start all thirteen games for the Tigers and have a respectable season completing 219 of 379 passes for 2,894 yards, 16 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He also added 28 rushing attempts for 399 yards and 7 more touchdowns. The Burrow led LSU Tigers finished 2018 with a 10-3 record and a win over Central Florida in the Fiesta Bowl.

Joe Burrow and the LSU Tigers began the 2019 season with a nonconference win over Georgia Southern. The following week, LSU won a massive showdown at the Texas Longhorns 45-38. They followed up with wins over Northwestern State, Vanderbilt, and Utah State before facing another ranked challenge in Florida which the Tigers would win 42-28. After a win against unranked Mississippi State, the Tigers would play back to back ranked games against the Auburn Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide, which LSU would win both. LSU would close out the undefeated regular season against Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Texas A&M. They would enter the SEC Championship Game ranked #2 and play #4 Georgia on a de facto College Football Playoff play in game, which the Tigers would dominate the Bulldogs 37-10.

The College Football Playoff Committee would select the 2019 Heisman Trophy Winner Joe Burrow led LSU as the #1 team, and pit them against the #4 Oklahoma Sooners in a Semi-Final match up at the Peach Bowl. LSU would win the bowl game 63-28 and play in the College Football National Championship Game against #3 Clemson, who defeated #2 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. LSU would win the College Football National Championship behind the leadership of the 2019 Heisman Trophy Winner Joe Burrow by a score of 42-25.

For the 2019 season, the 2019 Heisman Trophy Winner Joe Burrow had a banner year, where he completed 402 of 527 passing attempts for 5,671 yards, 60 touchdowns to 6 interceptions. Burrow added another 115 rushing attempts for 368 yards, and 5 touchdowns. Burrow led the NCAA in passing yards, touchdowns, and completion percentage (76.3%) for the 2019 season. Burrow was named Peach Bowl Offensive MVP, and the National Championship Game Offensive MVP.

Following the season, Senior Joe Burrow was out of eligibility in college football and entered the 2020 NFL Draft where he was selected #1 overall to the Cincinnati Bengals. [3]
